Just thought I'd add one thought to how to make left (non-dominant) hand stronger.
I made myself play along to my rock records and switched left hand for right -- my left used the hi hat, while my right hit the snare drum. Ultimately it opens up the entire kit, increases independence, and provides one with the entire spectrum of downward force for the right hand. Of course, Kenny Aronoff is the master of this technique. There's an old John Mellencamp recording from Saturday Night Live of -- I believe -- Paper and Fire. Kenny is masterful at developing power in that regard.
So, consider not only creating a groove with the left hand on the snare -- also consider uncrossing your arms and letting your left hand do a bunch of work to develop more equality between the hands, and stronger more powerful grooves.
GOOD ONE!
This is definately going to help me with double-bass issues. Thanks so much!! =)
